I also had horrible experience with 1and1, Sprint/Embarq/Earthlink, and MelbourneIT. They cost me about $80 and didn’t get any hosting and lost the domain name.
It was a big mess. Domain was registered and hosted with Sprint/Embarq/Earthlink (or whatever they call themselves these days), which costed about $30/month. Tried to move it over to 1&1, ended up paying Sprint/Embarq/Earthlink to release the domain, then turns out they were affiliated with MelbourneIT for domains, so ended up paying MelbourneIT again, then paid 1and1 for 6 month hosting.
At the end, I lost the domain name, and ended up registering whole new domain with another company and got it hosted. So the experience has cost me over $80. Lesson well learned.
On top of it, I just learned that 1and1 will be billing me again for Aug-Feb (remaining 6months). Apparently, the initial agreement was for 1 year? After searching around their site for an hour, I was finally able find cancel package option and was able to do so. But I will still be billed for next 6 months. LOL.
